Forty-five minute presentation for K-2nd grades (single classes or two combined classes) 
 

The From Idea to Picture Book  presentation includes how Over in Motown evolved. She will read the book and discuss three things that inspired the book. Audience participation is encouraged through use of interesting props and activities.

The From Idea to Picture Book  presentation includes how Sweet Music in Harlem evolved. She will read the book and discuss the famous photograph that inspired the book. Audience participation is encouraged through use of interesting props and activities.


One-hour presentation for 3rd-6th grades (single classes or up to three combined classes)

The From Idea to Picture Book  presentation includes how Sweet Music in Harlem evolved. She will read excerpts from the book and discuss the history of the famous photograph that inspired the book. Audience participation is encouraged through use of interesting props and writing activities. Participants learn about basic story elements, research and revision. 

The From Notes to A New Book  presentation includes how Over in Motown was created. She will read the book and discuss three things that inspired the book. Audience participation is facilitated through use of musical instruments and writing activities. Participants will learn basic poetry terms, research tips and the value of revision. 

The Writing Historical Fiction presentation includes identifying and using research tools. She will read excerpts from her publications that include stories about music (Sweet Music in Harlem) and the American Civil Rights Movement (Back Door Sugar). Audience participation is encouraged through use of authentic props and writing activities.


The Life of a Writer presentation includes how she conceives and crafts magazine stories. She will read the holiday story, “For the First Night of Kwanzaa”  and share props including a rain stick, bowl and kinara.  Other stories can be substituted.
